DISTRICT 798, BEIJING

If you happen to be in the area for the Olympics you have to go and visit Beijing’s District 798. Five years back this was the capital’s hot spot for artists. It’s a similar story to New York’s Soho or more recently Williamsburg. Artists came across this disused district full of ex-factories and semi-abandoned with lots of Bauhaus-style warehouses to inhabit many still displaying writings on their ceilings dating back to the cultural revolution.

So they opened up studios and ateliers and the quarter instantly became fashionable. Unsurprisingly the story ends with the artists being forced to leave to make way for first for art galleries and then for shops.
People in the know here say things are becoming a little too westernized. More and more glamour and less that’s truly genuine.

Overblown for purists District 798 is definitely worth a visit despite being a long way from the ferment today’s New York.
