Japanese VANGUARD

( plug generation)

11 11

Next time you’re passing through Tokyo, don’t miss a night out at one the hottest venues of the moment in the company of the “sararimen” (workers with super powers who go straight to their offices without passing by their beds at home). The Womb, is now in the top ten of the world’s best clubs. Get ready for a decidedly unusual welcome – no threatening bouncers at the door – just kind and gentle young people. And what’s more the cloakroom is replaced by a convenient locker room with a cupboard for each guest. Strange that no-one’s ever come up with that idea in Europe. Inside among lighting effects and interactive video devices you’ll find a plethora of international guests ranging from Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Sven Vath, Ellen Allien, Chris Liebing to Carl Cox. That’s if you’re just passing through!

Late of the Pier: the last brit electro rebels

( myPLAYLIST)

10 11

Suspended somewhere between electro, glam-rock and punk Late of the Pier are one of the latest phenomena to owe their explosive success to MySpace and musical blogs. They have a sophisticated and mature sound that interprets synth-pop through indie-rock sounds. All this finds form in their new album Fantasy black channel. As they say with complete candour: “We were always bored so when we discovered this new music we felt like explorers.” Have a listen and you’ll see what they mean!

The Selby
Photographer Todd Selby’s new web-based project, The Selby, showcases photos of people – whom you may or may not recognize – in their homes with their stuff. Scrolling through the site is voyeuristic, compelling, and a refreshing departure from the perfect interiors perpetuated by home magazines.

Provocations: someone’s watching you!

( plug generation)

Next time you’re walking past the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and you feel you’re being followed – relax! It’s just Double-Taker, a robotic arm 2.5 metres long located on the building’s roof. Its gigantic and disconcerting eye is up there tracking all your movements. Its creator, Professor Golan created it to get us to reflect on the mass of technology which surrounds us every day. An endless battery of CCTV cameras that tracks each step we make and all our movements as we move around the city. At least Double-Taker does its job in an ironic way! It always appears to seem as surprised as we are by the encounter – as if to underline that in each of us there’s something special and unique. Happily we don’t always need a bendy tube with an eye to remind us of that!
