The Towada Art Center is an example of machiokoshi (literally: “wake up the city”) sponsored by the Japanese Arts and Culture Minister on the island of Aomori (population 7,000) located nearer to Russia than to Tokyo.

The museum there exhibits the works of 21 contemporary artists of which two-thirds are foreign and in just a short time has transformed this rich provincial capital into a refined art city.
